DHEC Accepting Nominations for ‘Community Stars’

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 5, 2019

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Nominations are now being accepted for Community Star awards that spotlight some of South Carolina’s advocates for a better environment and healthier communities.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) annually recognizes Community Stars who go above and beyond environmental requirements to build stronger community relationships, promote environmental sustainability and resiliency, and improve quality of life in communities around the state. Residents can nominate a business, community organization, collaborative partnership or individual now through Aug. 1.

“Our Community Stars exemplify DHEC’s vision of ‘healthy people living in healthy communities,’” said Myra Reece, Director of Environmental Affairs. “We are proud to recognize the people, businesses and partnerships that demonstrate the value of environmental stewardship, public health education and going above and beyond to work with their surrounding communities.”

Last year’s winners were Santee Cooper, which was recognized in part for its multiple community engagement initiatives, and Brandon Burke, who was selected for his work with families and communities impacted by childhood cancer. Read more about last year’s winners here.

Winners of the 2019 Community Star awards will be announced at DHEC’s Environmental Assistance Conference to be held later this year.
