Your SC WIC team is working to ensure our participants can use their WIC benefits during these challenging times. We appreciate our WIC participants and are doing everything to provide you with your benefits. We will continue to monitor the status of COVID-19 and update this page as information develops. Most WIC clinics are still open. However, some WIC clinics will close temporarily to protect the health of our participants and staff. Your local WIC clinic will contact you if they are closing. 

Important: If you or anyone in your family have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, please call your WIC office and reschedule your appointment. You may also be able to complete your WIC appointment over the phone.

Is your grocery store out of your WIC infant formula? Please contact your local WIC clinic and ask for guidance. Do not try to make homemade infant formula, as it is dangerous for your baby.

 Debunking the Myths 

The SC WIC program is aware of false information circulating regarding WIC benefits. Our WIC participants and new applicants can receive benefits without having to be physically present. The USDA physical presence waiver has waived the requirement to be physically present to receive services during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is in effect from March 23- May 31, unless it is extended. The waiver applies to areas impacted by WIC clinic closures, stay at home orders and persons who are under quarantine. 

Clinic operating hours and staff availability will be subject to local and state orders related to the pandemic. Applicants and current participants should contact their local WIC clinic to find out what options are available. 

While locations are closed to the public, all WIC phone lines are open. New applicants will be assessed, certified and issued benefits by local clinic staff using the telephone, computer, and other technologies. Thanks to our recent implementation of eWIC, staff can issue food benefits remotely to those determined to be eligible for the program. We are offering everything we would if a person walked into our office over the phone. It is our goal to keep things operating as close to normal as possible with all circumstances considered. We can load eWIC cards after each participant has gone through their appointment and they don't have to leave the house. If they're new to the program, the cards will be mailed.  

It's our goal to meet the needs of the community by being there for those who are at risk or in need of assistance. We encourage our participants to continue to take measures to help safeguard against illness. 

 

WIC is a nutrition program that provides health education, healthy foods, breastfeeding support, and other services free of charge to South Carolina families who qualify.

WIC has day, afternoon and early evening appointments available. Select clinics may also have evening and Saturday appointments available. WIC even has walk-in hours!

Remember, please bring the family members applying for WIC services to the appointment (you, your child and/or your infant). If the appointment is for a child, only a parent or legal caretaker who lives with the child can bring the child and complete the paperwork.

WIC Supports Foster Families 

All foster children under age 5 are automatically eligible for WIC. Foster families play an important role in their children's growth and development. Learn more about how WIC helps foster families here

Fraud Prevention

The South Carolina WIC program is intended for families in need of nutritional education and support.  WIC foods and formula are to be used for the WIC participant only and cannot be sold or given away.  WIC foods not used by the participant should be returned to the local WIC site.  Fraud and abuse take resources away from those who need them most. In accordance with Federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, the USDA, its Agencies, offices, and employees, and institutions participating in or administering USDA programs are prohibited from discriminating based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity in any program or activity conducted or funded by USDA.

Persons with disabilities who require alternative means of communication for program information (e.g. Braille, large print, audiotape, American Sign Language, etc.), should contact the Agency (State or local) where they applied for benefits.  Individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities may contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339.  Additionally, program information may be made available in languages other than English.

To file a program complaint of discrimination, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, (AD-3027) found online at: http://www.ascr.usda.gov/complaint_filing_cust.html, and at any USDA office, or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested in the form. To request a copy of the complaint form, call (866) 632-9992. Submit your completed form or letter to USDA by:
