Overview
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is observed each October. It was first observed in 1987. While outreach campaigns occur year-round, October is when many independent organizations, as well as municipal, state and federal partners, bring heightened attention to domestic violence, including dating violence.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1 in 3 women and about 1 in 4 men in the United States report having experienced severe physical violence from a partner in their lifetime. This issue impacts people of every gender, and everyone knows someone affected by domestic violence.

Dating Violence and Abuse
Dating violence is when someone you are seeing romantically harms you in some way, whether it is physically, sexually, emotionally, or all three. It can happen on a first date, or once you've fallen deeply in love. Dating violence is never your fault. Learn the signs of dating violence or abuse and how to get help.

Children and Vulnerable Adults: To report known or suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, call 1-888-CARE4US (1-888-227-3487) or file a report online.

Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons
Provides temporary, emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their children for up to 60 days in Aiken, Barnwell and Allendale counties.

Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Assault
A non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the reduction of sexual assault, family violence, and child abuse and to the needs of its victims. Domestic violence services are available in Florence, Darlington, Marion, Chesterfield, Marlboro, Dillon, and Williamsburg counties. In addition, sexual assault services are available in these same counties and also in Clarendon county.

Safe Harbor
Provides a continuum of services to victims of domestic violence and their children; and to eliminate cultural acceptance of domestic violence through a coordinated community response, education, and prevention. Domestic violence services are available in Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union counties.

Sistercare
Provides trauma-informed services, to advocate for domestic violence survivors and their children, and to promote prevention of domestic violence through community awareness and training. Sistercare is the only organization that offers specialized shelter and support services for survivors of domestic violence and their children in Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, and Richland counties.
