DHEC Board Announces Selection of New Director

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The S.C. Board of Health and Environmental Control announced today the selection of Dr. Rick Toomey for appointment as director of the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

"Dr. Toomey's years of leadership experience in the health care industry, coupled with his in-depth familiarity with DHEC make him uniquely qualified to lead the Department as it continues its current positive path forward," said Board Charmain Mark Elam. This selection was made after the review of more than 130 applicants and the consideration of many highly qualified individuals and is subject for approval by the Governor and confirmation by the Senate.

Toomey served as president and CEO of Beaufort Memorial Hospital from November 2007 to September 2016.  He currently serves on the Beaufort Historical Foundation's Finance Committee and is a past chair of both the North Carolina and South Carolina Hospital Association Boards.

The DHEC director is selected by the board to serve a four-year term.
