Tobacco Cessation

Smoking and COVID-19

Smoking tobacco may increase the risk of serious complications from novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Now is a good time to quit for keeps. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or enroll online for free help.

Healthcare provider reminder systems and training on tobacco cessation intervention increase quit attempts among tobacco users.

Health Systems Change
According to the U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline, Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: 2008 Update, systems changes can improve the operation of healthcare systems, leading to better clinician interventions that integrate tobacco cessation into healthcare delivery using various strategies.  Effective strategies include:

  • Developing processes to ensure that tobacco dependence treatment, and its documentation, is fully integrated into care and sustained over time
  • Implementing quality improvement processes to enable integration of tobacco dependence treatment best practices into routine care
  • Demonstrating meaningful use of electronic health records (EHR) systems

DTPC works with statewide partners to help build the capacity of South Carolina healthcare systems to impact tobacco use by supporting the integration of science-based tobacco intervention protocol for healthcare providers and the adoption of e-referral for the S.C. Tobacco Quitline.  Efforts like these allow organizations to implement solutions that support clinicians and health systems to address tobacco use consistently and effectively.

Tobacco users are 3 times more likely to quit successfully using Quitline services than by quitting on their own.
