Over the years the causes of death in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties has changed dramatically. At one time tuberculosis, syphilis and malaria were among the top causes of death, but have now been replaced by accidents, diabetes and pulmonary disease. Unfortunately, some diseases have remained among the top killers over time. Heart disease has remained one of the main causes of death, it was the #1 cause in 1920, and #2 cause in 2003. Flu and pneumonia combined have remained another key cause of death, even though it has become largely preventable.
