Selection Criteria for South Carolina WIC Eligible Food Items
The State Agency is responsible for developing a list of foods in accordance with federal requirements for selection by WIC participants.
The following criteria and guidelines were developed to provide a uniform method of approving foods for the South Carolina WIC approved food list.
Submission Deadline Dates
Submission deadline for consideration of WIC food package items in South Carolina is April 1 with the exception of ready-to-eat cereal, which is January 1. Review and evaluation of approved foods list for all food packages is in May of every year. Implementation of all decisions concerning food packages is on October 1.
Food products presented for approval must be commercially available in the state of South Carolina for 1 year prior to eligibility consideration with no problem of distribution, recall, or documented health problem associated with the product.
WIC eligible food products must comply with applicable local, state, and federal laws. Infant formulas, exempt infant formulas, fruit and vegetable juices, infant cereals, hot adult cereals, milks, cheeses, fresh eggs, legumes, peanut butters, carrots, and canned tuna products must comply with FDA Standards of Identity as explained in the Code of Federal Regulations.
