The South Carolina Health Plan

The South Carolina Health Plan outlines the need for medical facilities and services in the state. It is used as one of the criteria for reviewing projects under the Certificate of Need program.

The South Carolina Health Plan contains an inventory of facilities and services and utilization data for health care facilities.  It also projects the need for acute care hospitals, psychiatric beds, alcohol and drug abuse treatment facilities, residential care facilities for treatment of children and adolescents, nursing homes, home health agencies, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), rehabilitation beds, cardiac catheterization programs, open heart surgery services and radiation therapy equipment. 

Copies of the 2004 - 2005 State Health Plan are only available via the mail and the cost is $25.00. To request a copy of the plan, please send a request in writing to:

What is the Health Planning Committee?
This committee advises the Department in the development of the South Carolina Health Plan. The committee is composed of fourteen members representing health care consumers, health care financiers including business and insurance, and health care providers. Twelve members are appointed by the Governor, one is appointed by the Board of Health and Environmental Control and the State Consumer Advocate is an ex-officio member.
