OCRM's planning department provides technical expertise, public outreach, project management and research collaboration to local governments and other agencies to develop a sustainable framework for coastal development and resource preservation.
Special Area Management Plans (SAMPs)
Uses of coastal resources are not always mutually compatible and conflicts of use can occur. Where these conflicts are widespread, a Special Area Management Plan (SAMP) is used to collect and examine data, identify potential development trends and anticipate conflicts between different uses. SAMPs can be used to develop strategies to protect and manage resources in order to insure the goals of the various users of the resource are compatible. During the preparation of a SAMP, alternatives that will address and manage conflicts will be explored, and policies which will implement the chosen alternatives, will be identified. These alternatives include refinement of policy or application of existing policy in a specific geographical area.
Low Impact Development (LID)
Low Impact Development (LID) is an innovative stormwater management approach with a basic principle that is modeled after nature. LID's goal is to mimic a site's predevelopment hydrology by using design techniques that infiltrate, filter, store, evaporate, and detain runoff close to its source.
Best Management Practices
Best Management Practices (BMPs) are broadly defined as stormwater management and conservation practices that have been demonstrated to effectively control movement of pollutants, prevent degradation of soil and water resources, and that are compatible with the land use. Simply put, BMPs help us manage and lessen the adverse impacts typically associated with stormwater runoff. BMPs can be divided into two categories: structural and nonstructural.
Hurricane Preparation and Response
If a hurricane, tropical storm or other severe weather event damages South Carolina's Coast, OCRM is responsible for damage assessment and emergency communication with state and local government officials.
Septic System Planning and Maintenance
Out of sight, out of mind is the attitude most people have when it comes to their septic system. The lack of routine maintenance can result in less-than-desirable circumstances, such as sewage backing up into your house, seeping into your yard, or polluting ground and surface waters. Make sure your septic system is properly planned and maintained.
Community Assistance Grants
Each year, OCRM offers an opportunity for local governments and counties to compete for funding to support innovative projects that support OCRM's mission.
