What is B2?

The B2 (Breathe Better) program is an anti-idling/clean air campaign (pdf). The goal of the campaign is to protect the health and safety of children by reducing harmful vehicle emissions (pdf) around school campuses. Mobile sources such as passenger vehicles, delivery trucks, and school buses are major contributors to air pollution in South Carolina.

Why focus on school campuses?

Because children breathe in twice as much air as adults, they inhale more pollutants. Air pollution has been linked to respiratory problems (pdf) like asthma, one of the most common causes of school absences. Reducing your vehicle’s idling time is an easy way to reduce children’s exposure to air pollution, especially before and after school.

What are schools doing about it?

Several schools around the state have implemented anti-idling actions as part of their school policy. These actions include: a voluntary anti-idling policy for parents/carpooling and a mandatory anti-idling policy for school buses; posting “anti-idling” signs (provided by DHEC) around the school campus; and other school projects aimed at improving air quality.
