The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is overseeing the ongoing cleanup of soil and groundwater contamination at a site owned and operated by Circle K Stores, Inc. located at 4315 Savannah Highway in Ravenel, South Carolina.

Overview
On July 26, 2018, an unknown substance was reported to DHEC in the roadway near the intersection of Savannah Highway and Highway 162 in Ravenel (Charleston County). The substance was later identified as petroleum and confirmed to be coming from leaks in the piping of an underground storage tank (UST) system at the Circle K gas station site across the road. Circle K Stores, Inc. is responsible for the cleaning up the contamination. Contractors for Circle K Stores, Inc. are conducting site rehabilitation activities under DHEC oversight.
Components of the UST system that were identified as the cause of the petroleum release were removed and replaced in September 2018. The investigation to determine the extent and severity of the petroleum contamination has concluded and DHEC has requested that Circle K Stores, Inc. conduct active corrective action at the site. Circle K Stores, Inc environmental contractor is proposing a cleanup strategy to remediate the petroleum contamination to levels that are safe for human health and the environment.

Virtual Community Meeting
DHEC held a virtual community meeting to discuss the CAP on September 22, 2020, at 6:30 pm. The community meeting was an informal conversation and allowed participants the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers from DHEC staff and the onsite contractor performing the cleanup. The meeting was held virtually using an online platform in a live-event setting which allows continued community engagement in DHEC’s process while following local, state and federal guidelines for social distancing and avoiding large group gatherings.
