Program marks 10 years of achievement in environmental excellence

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Environmental Excellence Program commemorated its 10th year of recognizing companies that practice good environmental stewardship, the state Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

SCEEP is a voluntary initiative designed to recognize and reward South Carolina facilities that have demonstrated superior environmental performance through pollution prevention, energy and resource conservation, and the use of an environmental management system. The program is housed at DHEC, but is directed by the SCEEP Advisory Committee, which includes representatives of industry, environment, government, academic and public interest.

SCEEP observed its 10th anniversary at Seawell’s Banquet and Reception Center on Jan. 30.

"SCEEP encourages companies to become environmental leaders," said Robert W. King Jr., DHEC’s deputy commissioner for Environmental Quality Control. "Members are committed to improving South Carolina’s environment by reducing their waste streams through pollution prevention and by reducing their consumption of energy and other resources.

"SCEEP serves as a vehicle for sharing environmental knowledge and expertise so that other companies and facilities can better understand and appreciate the importance of environmental excellence and become environmental leaders themselves," King said. "And it is important to note that a member's commitment to environmental excellence is not just something printed on their mission statement.

"That commitment implies actions that lead to measurable results and SCEEP members have shown a willingness to take those necessary steps," King said.
