Chapin Elementary students selected for All-Health Team

COLUMBIA – Chapin Elementary School has been selected as an All-Health Team winner for its Nutrition on the Run project, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

“The purpose of Nutrition on the Run is to maintain and or improve student wellness,” said Dana Riley, physical education teacher at Chapin Elementary. “The goal of our program is to increase student awareness and knowledge to good eating habits while increasing physical activity.

“Nutrition on the Run will be implemented in our physical education program through nutrition games and activities which will provide hands-on learning for students in kindergarten through the fifth grade,” she said.

According to Riley, the expected outcome is that many students will score in the healthy fitness zone on the FITNESSGRAM assessment in grades three through five.

“The hope is that they will learn more about nutrition through information gathered from MyPyramid.gov and activities such as Pyramid Power, Nutrition on the Run and Express Check-Out,” Riley said. “This information will be shared at PTA meetings and other teachers in the district.”

For being named to the All-Health Team, Chapin Elementary’s Nutrition on the Run project will receive a $500 grant, t-shirts and other All-Health Team items, recognition on the All-Health Team Web site and a television spot on WIS-TV in Columbia.

DHEC and WIS-TV sponsor the All-Health Team. Each month, the partnership recognizes an individual or youth group promoting health in their community.
