Blythewood High School selected for All-Health Team

COLUMBIA – Blythewood High School has been selected for the All-Health Team because of “The Pathway to a Healthy Life” project, which promotes health awareness and disease prevention, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

“The Pathway to a Healthy Life project provides an excellent opportunity to empower students to become effective change agents for promoting good health,” said Lila Abraham, project coordinator. “This winter, the students are focusing on the dangers of hypertension. They know prolonged hypertension can cause strokes and heart attacks and, through use of exercise and a proper diet, want to decrease the number of people who develop hypertension.”

Abraham says students plan to present the information in a fun and easy-to-understand format at the school’s Showcase of Career Clusters, which is open to the community, on Feb. 20. One hour prior to the presentation students will take blood pressure readings with the support of community health care providers.

The project will involve students from various classes and student organizations such as the photography club, which will take pictures; the marketing and computer classes, which will promote the event; student newspaper club, which will write an article; and the Future Farmers of America club, which will create a nutritious food display.

“By working together to enlighten the public, as well as children, about preventing hypertension we can promote change,” said Abraham.

For being named to the All-Health Team, The Pathway to a Healthy Life project at Blythewood High School will receive $500, t-shirts and other All-Health items, recognition on the All-Health Web site and a television spot on WIS-TV 10.

The school plans to use the money to buy equipment such as blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, and fat and muscle replica models for their Health Science Class to enhance their project.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control and WIS-TV 10 sponsor the All-Health Team. Each month, the partnership recognizes an individual or youth group promoting health in their community.
